Book #11 The Nutcracker adapted by Alexandre Dumas from E.T.A. Hoffmann
Book #11 Reveal: The Nutcracker
Today’s book unwraps a true holiday classic: The Nutcracker! This magical tale follows young Clara on Christmas Eve as she receives a wooden nutcracker that mysteriously comes to life. Together, they journey into an enchanted world filled with toy soldiers, a brave Mouse King, sparkling snowflakes, and the dazzling Land of Sweets. Each page feels like stepping into a dream—full of wonder, bravery, and the joy of imagination.
A Little Background
The Nutcracker story was originally written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, in 1816, a German author famous for his whimsical and sometimes spooky fairy tales. The version most children know today is adapted from his story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Later, the legendary composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky transformed the tale into the world-famous ballet we still enjoy every winter. His music—especially the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”—is now a holiday tradition all on its own.
Why This Book was Chosen
I chose The Nutcracker because it brings together storytelling, music, art, and imagination. It invites children to explore fantasy worlds and introduces them to the joy of classical music in a way that feels fun, festive, and full of sparkle.
Activities for Children of All Ages
Young Kids/Early Elementary: Listen to a few pieces from The Nutcracker Suite and dance like snowflakes, soldiers, or sugar plum fairies. Then draw your favorite character from the story.
Early Elementary: Create your own simple nutcracker craft—using paper tubes, cardboard, or wooden shapes—and decorate it with bright colors and gems.
Late Elementary: Compare the book with a performance of The Nutcracker (a recorded version works great!).
From music and movement to crafts and creativity, The Nutcracker invites every child to step into a world of wonder—one filled with imagination, courage, and a little holiday magic.
It is hard to believe, but our next book is our last. I know I am a bit sad too. However, I know you will love this one it has a wonderful surprise at the end!
