Book #6 Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner

Book 6 Reveal: Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner

Today’s Jolabokaflod selection is Over and Under the Snow, a quiet, enchanting story that explores the hidden world beneath a blanket of winter snow. While the surface is still and silent, under the snow, animals are busy preparing, moving, and surviving the cold season. Messner’s poetic text and beautifully layered illustrations make the hidden life of winter feel magical and alive.

Why This Book was Chosen

I chose Over and Under the Snow because it reveals the secret side of winter that many children don’t get to see—how life goes on even when everything seems quiet. It encourages curiosity, observation, and imagination, making it perfect for kids who love both nature and storytelling. This book is a gentle reminder that there’s always more happening than meets the eye, even in the snow.

Activity Suggestions for Children of All Ages

Young Children (Preschool–Early Elementary)

Snow Tunnel Play: Create “tunnels” using blankets or boxes to explore the idea of hidden spaces, just like the animals under the snow.

Early Elementary

Hidden Animal Game: Hide paper or toy animals around the classroom/home and have kids “search” like a winter detective.

Late Elementary

Layered Snow Habitat Drawing: Create a cross-section illustration showing both the snowy surface and the underground life beneath.

This story is a wonderful reminder to slow down, peek beneath the surface, and appreciate the hidden wonders all around us during winter. I hope you are enjoying our winter book flood! Our next book is one of my favorites! Would you like to travel to Northern Europe, long ago? You will love this story of bravery!
